If the music industry had a family tree, there’d be a lot of short stumps (one-hit wonders) and circular branches (artists who ventured out, only to return home). GTR, a “super-group” which distinguished themselves by featuring guitar – rather than keyboard – synthesizers, exemplified both stumps AND circular branches. Founded by guitar veterans Steve Hackett & Steve Howe, GTR were themselves a one-hit wonder with this single; they disbanded the following year. Hackett, an earlier member of Genesis, did NOT return to his former band; he launched a solo career and released his last studio album in 2009. Howe, an earlier member of Yes who then joined Asia before forming GTR, completed his circular path by returning to Asia and then to Yes. He still plays with Yes, but he released a solo album last year. It was just announced Yes is currently in the studio and will release a new album this summer. The musical family tree keeps growing…
