Whatever Happened To… Black Box?

Ride on Time – Black Box (1989)
This Italian dance music group, comprised of Daniele Davoli, Mirko Limoni, and Valerio Semplici, rode the wave of Euro-dance popular at the time. They enlisted Katrin Quinol, a Caribbean model, to be their “image.” She only danced and lip-synched, while professional singers – like Loleatta Holloway & Martha Wash – provided the vocals. This practice, when not properly crediting the true vocalist, led to legal problems for Black Box, resulting in royalties being relinquished and releases being re-issued. Black Box released their second – and last – studio album in 1995, and they stopped performing together in 1998. Davoli spun at Ibiza before teaming up with British DJ Chris Lloyd to form Rock Da World, and they tour throughout the UK. Similarly, Semplici has teamed up with fellow Italian Bertani Mirco to form Club Squisito, a house/jazz duo. Limoni has stayed out of public view for the most part, but has surfaced occasionally to compose, remix or engineer for others.
