Whatever Happened To… Chic?

Le Freak – Chic (1978)
This American band – led by the trio of Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, and Tony Thompson – benefitted from the disco explosion of the late 70’s. But once the backlash against disco sunk in during the early 80’s, they disbanded and worked on various solo and collaborative production and performance projects. In addition to his own solo work, Rodgers went to become one of the most prolific and successful producers of 20th century popular music. His clientele included names like Madonna, Duran Duran, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Al Jarreau, among many others. Meanwhile, Edwards also released solo work and produced for others, namely the Power Station, Robert Palmer, Rod Stewart, ABC, and others. Thompson, a drummer, went on to join supergroups the Power Station & the Distance. Chic reunited in the early 90’s and released their last album in 1993. Edwards died of pneumonia in 1996, and Thompson succumbed to cancer in 2003. Rodgers has continued to be a prolific artist & industry icon, working on film & video game soundtracks in addition to launching his own record label & charity foundation. Last year, he published his autobiography.
