This English band, once a quintet, were a trio when they scored this hit. The decade that followed saw Genesis reach the heights of commercial success, making them one of the best-selling acts of all time. Front-man Phil Collins, who concurrently launched a successful solo career during the 80’s & 90’s, left the band in 1996. Mike Rutherford & Tony Banks recruited a new vocalist, but only put out one more album before pulling the plug on Genesis. Rutherford continued to work on his successful side project Mike + the Mechanics. And Banks, a classically trained pianist, dabbled in classical music in the early 00’s. The trio reunited in 2006 for a tour, but has not yet returned to the studio. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, and Phil Collins announced his retirement from the music industry the following year. Rutherford & Banks occasionally make appearances together, but the future of the band remains unclear.
